An image library to spark conversation

We have partnered with community members, creatives, learners, health professions educators, and museum educators to compile an image library to assist educators in using visual art to stimulate rich conversations among health professions learners on topics relevant to bias, racism, and health equity. Images are accompanied by best practices and guides for facilitators. This work is supported by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Institute for Excellence in Education.

How to Use & Implement

This image guide is designed to assist educators use art to spark critical thinking, introspection, and dialogue around topics relevant to bias, racism, and health equity. Specifically, we have curated a compendium of images that have been tested and seen to stimulate rich conversations among health professions learners. We recommend that such discussions be facilitated to support authentic exchanges of ideas including some that may be new and/or out of the comfort zone of participants. The objective is to nurture growth in self-awareness, the capacity to address discomfort, and the language to enable empathetic, productive discussions.

For optimal results, we recommend using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) when discussing these images. VTS is an evidence-based framework that generates rigorous yet open discussions of works of art.
